About the Therapist

Catherine Johnston - Ayrshire CanineI am Catherine and I own Ayrshire Canine Clinical Massage. I have worked with dogs for over 16 years but wanted a new challenge and to learn something that could really make a difference to dogs lives. I attended a Beginners Workshop on Clinical Canine Massage in 2018 and the rest is history. I share my life with Ziggy my 3 year old Border Collie and Rufus, my 1 year old Working Cocker Spaniel.

I was trained by Natalie Lenton of the Canine Massage Therapy Centre, completing the 2 year Practitioner Programme which involves over 800 hours of study covering anatomy, physiology and the law, as well as hands on practical training and over 30 case study treatments to further develop my skills. The unique Lenton Method™ which forms part of our training has just been the subject of the world’s first clinical trials in to the effectiveness of canine massage and the recently published results are amazing.

Whether your dog is a beloved family pet who is slowing down and showing their age, has an existing orthopaedic condition such as Osteoarthritis, Hip Dysplasia, Luxating Patella or Cruciate Ligament Disease, or a sporting dog who has lost their form, Clinical Canine Massage can help to rehabilitate soft tissue injuries, assist with pain management and areas of overcompensation, and improve your dog’s mobility and overall comfort and wellbeing.

I offer treatment in my therapy room at home, or may be able to travel to you if this is preferable

Cost

£35 per session (travel costs may be extra)

Client Comments

Leo is only 2 but was diagnosed with hip dysplasia as a puppy. He can be a bit fussy and excitable but Catherine took time to get to know him and gain his trust – he even fell asleep during one of the sessions! I live in an upstairs flat which Leo was finding difficult. Since massage I have noticed in improvement in his mobility. Leo also visited his groomer 2 days after his second massage treatment, and the groomer commented on Leo’s improved tolerance to being handled on his hind limbs. I definitely think massage has been of benefit to Leo and would highly recommend.

Anne-Marie and Leo (Shih Tzu – 2 years)

Millie’s walking was much improved especially in the days following her massage treatments. It was great to see  her enjoying her walks, being more jaunty, and less stiff than before. We will continue with maintenance sessions for Millie to help support her arthritis and pain management.

Aileen and Millie (Labrador – 10 years)

I was not sure if massage therapy could help Kingston due to his age, but after 3 treatments, his mobility has greatly improved and he can jump on to the sofa and in to the car without assistance for the first time since we adopted him. His legs appear to move more freely when he is out walking too and he enjoys big stretches now!

Anne and Kingston (Dalmatian – 11 years)

Despite being a head strong Westie, Maddox settled for massage thanks to Catherine’s patient and measured approach. Prior to massage, Maddox had displayed tremors in his back left leg for a couple of years. After 2 treatments, these had stopped and it some time since I have seen any shaking. His overall posture and walking gait has also improved – even the neighbours have commented!

Mark and Maddox (West Highland Terrier – 14 years)
